Sonic Booms: How the Sound and Science of Technology Created Pop Music. Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts, 470 SW 15th Street, Corvallis. The Big Picture: American Quilts from the Volckening Collection. Philomath Museum, 1101 Main Street, Philomath. 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Free. Celtic Festival Kick Off. Common Fields, 545 SW 3rd St., Corvallis. 5 p.m. Free. Last year’s inaugural festival was a grand success, bringing together community partners and musicians from all over Oregon. The free event was supported by button sales and donations both large and small. This year’s festival will again be by donation and will feature 25 bands and 17 workshops. Festivities begin with a kick-off concert on Thursday evening July 25 featuring three Corvallis-based bands. Common Fields in downtown Corvallis is hosting this free event and donating a percentage of food and beverage sales to the festival. On Friday evening, July 26, the festival headliner Rakish, a fiddle and guitar duo from Boston, will perform at the newly opened state-of-the art PRAx concert hall on the Oregon State University campus. This is the only ticketed festival event and tickets will be available on the PRAx website. Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28 will take place in and around Central Park. Admission is free although festival buttons for a donation of $10 or more will be available. Each day starts with a bagpipers parade. Main Stage in Central Park will host 8 bands on Saturday and 4 bands on Sunday. Rakish. PRAx, 470 SW 15th Street, Corvallis. 7:30 p.m. $25. This is the headliner concert for the Corvallis Celtic Festival, July 25-28. In a performance that toes the line between concert music and session music, the Boston-based duo Rakish explores tunes and songs from Irish and American folk traditions in a way that reflects their shared interest in and love for old traditional tunes and chamber music. Maura Shawn Scanlin, a two-time U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion and a winner of the Glenfiddich Fiddle Competition, wields the technical range of a classical violinist and the deep sensitivity of a traditional musician. Guitarist Conor Hearn, a native to the Irish music communities of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, performs with several traditional music bands.
